Artists mentioned in the Clash's "White Man in Hammersmith Palais"
One of the Clash's finest moments was "White Man in Hammersmith Palais," a 1978 UK single that also appeared on the re-sequenced 1979 US issue of their self-titled debut. The beginning of the song was inspired by a reggae show Joe Strummer attended (and was disappointed in) and mentions three arists who performed. The song goes on to make serious, poetic social commentary, including the now common phrase, "Turning rebellion into money." While even a casual Clash fan (can there be sucha thing?) knows "White Man," most probably aren't familiar with the three artists whose names appear in the lyrics, so here they are along with this Clash classic.
The Clash:
Dillinger:
Leroy Smart:
Delroy Wilson:

Video: Gaslight Anthem - Come Together
"Come Together" has always been one of the few Beatles' songs that just never connected with me, but Gaslight Anthem do a cool, stripped-down version. Check it out.

Video: U2 - "Out of Control"
One of my favs.
It's hard to believe they were once a little band playing clubs.
Then they grew...
And grew...

Video: Christmas Classics
The Kinks' "Father Christmas" is still my favorite song for the season. It's fun, it rocks and it has an important message to boot.
This is one of the saddest, but there's hope in there too.
Blues Traveler added this ??????????????????????. (Sorry it's not really a video)
U2's version of "I Believe in Father Christmas" is easier to take than Greg Lake's original.
But, so as not to offend the many Greg Lake fans, here's his version.
No one knows the spirit of giving better than Slade after they gave Quiet Riot a career. But here's their rock n roll Christmas classic.
Sadly, this one still rings true.
On one hand, Run DMC's "Christmas in Hollis" is a holiday novelty, but that groove can't be beat.
This one is for my wife. (She hates the Boss. Ha, ha.)
Merry Christmas everyone!

Video: Avett Brothers - "Murder in the City"
The Avett Brothers have premiered their video for “Murder in the City” on PasteMagazine.com. Taken from their acoustically recorded EP The Second Gleam, “Murder in the City” will be running exclusively on PasteMagazine.com until Monday, October 6.
“Murder in the City” video
The Second Gleam comes on the heels of the band’s very successful 2007 release Emotionalism, which was lauded as one of the top albums of 2007 by Paste Magazine. 2007 also saw The Avett Brothers winning the title of Best Group of the Year by the American Music Association. The Avett Brothers recently signed with American Recordings/Columbia Records. Their first major label effort will feature production by Rick Rubin and should be out in early 2009.
Along the way The Avett Brothers have built up an impressive and loyal fan base with constant touring. The Avett Brothers have been selling out performances during their current tour in major markets such as Dallas and Seattle, and playing to packed, enthusiastic crowds across the country. The Seattle Times said of their performance, “The Avett Brothers connect with acoustic brilliance…the most honest, forthright pop music being made today.”

Found in the Shuffle: Angry Samoans - "I Lost (My Mind)"
Song: I Lost (My Mind)
Artist: Angry Samoans
Album: STP Not LSD
The Angry Samoans are best remembered for the silly manic punk tirades of their first couple of albums, but they released an EP and an LP of cool, fun psych/garage/punk albums in the mid-to-late 80s that often get overlooked. This one comes from 1988's STP Not LSD which, for all of its lo-fi bumps and bruises, is my favorite of their albums. It's not pretty, but oddly perfect.

Another of my favorite Christmas tunes. This is sad one, but Christmas isn't happy for everyone and it might be good to remember that in the midst of all the festivities. The words are incredible.
